Mr. Andrew Chambler

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon & Shoulder Specialist

Mr. Andrew Chambler is an Orthopaedic Consultant and Specialist Shoulder surgeon at Circle Bath Hospital. He leads the Upper Limb unit and is referred patients from the south west of England as well as internationally from countries such as Pakistan and Bahrain. Currently, he is also Clinical Chairman of Circle Bath Hospital. He is a specialist in shoulder and elbow surgery. A large part of his practice is made up of shoulder and elbow joint replacements and tendon problems.

Mr. Chambler trained at St Mary’s Hospital in London, followed by the Northwest Thames Orthopaedic rotation program. His Master of Surgery was undertaken at Imperial College. He is fellowship trained in shoulder and elbow surgery from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. He has been awarded travelling fellowships to Europe and the Mayo Clinic in the USA to further developed his experience in shoulder and elbow disorders.

Mr. Chambler was a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Yeovil District Hospital for many years and joined Circle Bath in 2010 as a surgical partner. In 2013 he moved full time to Circle as the first Executive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Circle Health. In 2016 he was appointed Clinical Chairman of Circle Bath Hospital.

Mr. Harry Brownlow, FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Circle Reading

Mr. Harry Brownlow is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises entirely in problems affecting the shoulder and elbow regions. He also delivers immediate diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound guided injections.

Mr. Brownlow qualified with a first class degree in medicine after having gained a BSc for research in basic anatomy. He trained on the academic programme in Oxford and gained an MD for a thesis on research into fracture healing. He won the prize for the best written national exit exam in Orthopaedics. He completed fellowships in advanced shoulder and elbow surgery in Oxford, Sydney and Reading. He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading in 2003, and joined Circle Reading in 2012.

Mr. Brownlow has collected Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROMS) since 2004 and is one of the few surgeons who publishes his success rates.

Mr. Olly Donaldson, FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Yeovil General Hospital

Mr. Donaldson is a full time Consultant specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery based at Yeovil District Hospital. He qualified from the University of Bristol in 2002 and underwent his orthopaedic training in Wales. He completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Liverpool Shoulder Unit.

Mr Donaldson provides extensive experience in shoulder and elbow conditions offering a wide variety of surgical procedures to the shoulder and elbow. He has developed a busy practice in shoulder replacements performing approximately 50 per year, nearly 1% of all shoulder replacements performed in the UK. Common operations also include keyhole surgery to the shoulder to treat subacromial impingement, rotator cuff problems and shoulder instability.

He has experience in treating tendon problems around the elbow including tennis elbow as well as elbow arthritis.

Mr. Joby George-Malal, FRCS (Orth)

Mr. George-Malal qualified in 1998 from Mahatma Gandhi University, India. He did his post-graduate orthopaedic training at Sion (LTMMC) Hospital, Mumbai, gaining his master of surgery degree from Mumbai University.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic and Arthroplasty Surgeon at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital and Wrexham in 2003. Mr Karlakki has been solely based at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital since 2009 and performs more than 300 joint replacements per annum, and he is now the Clinical Director for the Hospital. Mr Karlakki has attended more than 60 courses; he has also been an examiner on the clinical examination course from 2001–2009. He has several research projects in progress, has published numerous research publications and presented many papers and posters to learned societies. Mr Karlakki has been using the Optetrak Logic® Knee System for more than two years and is receiving very favourable results.

Mr. Ben Gooding, FRSC (Orth)

Mr. Gooding is a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon and Clinical Chairman at Circle Nottingham. He completed the Nottingham Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, The Sheffield Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Orthopaedics, Boston USA 2012, Australia – Southern Orthopaedics and The Sydney Shoulder Institute 2011.

He trained at the Nottingham University Hospitals, Derby Hospitals and Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

His clinical practice includes both arthroscopic and open surgery. His Special Interests include Elbow, Trauma and ligament injuries, Arthritis and Elbow replacement, Soft Tissue Injury of the Shoulder, Degenerative conditions of the Shoulder, Shoulder fractures. He has a particular interest in education and has been involved in development of orthopaedic assessment tools and medical websites.

Mr. Inigo Guisasola, FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Mr. Guisasola obtained his medical degree from Navarra University in Spain. His orthopaedic postgraduate training was undertaken in Madrid (Spain). He took up a Consultant post in San Sebastian and practised there from 1992 to 2002.

Mr. Guisasola moved to Blackpool in 2002 and worked as consultant in orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in shoulder surgery at Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Hospitals Foundation Trust. He took up a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at Liverpool Upper Limb Unit in 2005.

He became a consultant orthopaedic shoulder and elbow surgeon at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital in 2009 and practices there since.

His interests are centred in shoulder reconstructive techniques, including arthroscopic work and shoulder arthroplasty. He has been using the
Equinoxe Shoulder System regularly for the last four years. He is involved in several research projects and training of fellows.

Mr. Gavin Jennings MBBS, MA (Cantab), FRCS (Tr and Orth)

Mr. Gavin Jennings studied at St John’s College, Cambridge and St Mary’s Hospital, London before undertaking his orthopaedic and sub-specialist training in London.

Mr. Jennings was awarded a Fellowship in South Africa under Joe De Beer, one of the world’s leading arthroscopic (keyhole) shoulder surgeons.

He subsequently undertook a further Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Athletic Injuries at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver under Professor McCormack (Chief Medical Officer for the Canadian Olympic Team). He was actively involved both in research and the treatment of numerous world class sportsmen during these periods abroad.

Mr. Jennings has a wealth of experience in Arthroscopic procedures as well as experience with complex open procedures. These include operations for the treatment of irreparable tendon problems; the treatment of arthritis including all types of shoulder replacement; treatments for trauma and fractures around the shoulder and clavicle and tendon transfers (on which he has published internationally).

He is frequently referred patients with complex shoulder problems from other orthopaedic surgeons. His focus is gaining the best possible results for his individual patients where goals can range from the reduction of pain and dysfunction to the return to high-level sporting activities.

The diagnosis and treatment of the whole spectrum of problems related to the shoulder girdle. All arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder.

Mr. Muthu Jeyam, FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Salford Royal University Teaching Hospital

Mr. Jeyam is a consultant shoulder and upper limb surgeon at the Salford Royal University Teaching Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant in 2006.

Mr. Jeyam was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995. Following this, he completed full time research at the University of Manchester obtaining a M-Phil research degree. Mr. Jeyam further completed his higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery within Manchester for which he was awarded the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons in trauma and orthopaedics in 2004.

Mr. Jeyam gained valuable training from the prestigious Nottingham shoulder and elbow unit. Further to this he obtained international experience from a fellowship at The Harvard Shoulder Service and The Boston Sports Injury Service, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was awarded the senior British Shoulder and Elbow Society Fellowship in 2011, providing an opportunity to visit key opinion leaders in shoulder surgery; Dr. S. Burkhart in San Antonio, Texas USA and Prof. P. Boileau in Nice, France.

Mr. Jeyam specialises in arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery. His practice includes management of patients with upper limb sports injuries. In addition he performs open surgery including arthroplasty and specialises in complex upper limb trauma and fracture management. He is a member of the British Shoulder and Elbow Society (BESS). He is an honorary clinical lecturer at Salford University and he is involved in co-ordinating the postgraduate course in orthopaedic management at the University. Mr. Jeyam is part of numerous teaching faculties both nationally and internationally. He has published his academic work including research activities in peer-reviewed journals and presented at a variety of congress meetings.

Mr. Sudheer Karlakki, FRCS (Orth)

Mr. Karlakki completed his MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering in 1999, obtained his FRCS (Orth) in 2000 and completed his lower limb fellowship at Wrightington Hospital, UK in 2001.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic and Arthroplasty Surgeon at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital and Wrexham in 2003. Mr. Matthew Kent, FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals

Mr. Kent was appointed as a Consultant Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals in 2011 after completing training in the Cambridge region, an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering and a post CCT shoulder fellowship in Liverpool.

His main focus has been on developing the shoulder arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty service at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals. He has visited numerous centers of excellence in Europe and North America to gain additional expertise in this field and now performs many complex primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty procedures as well as using the Exactech system for anatomical, reverse and fracture surgery.

Mr. Rishee Parmar MBChB, FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics)

Mr. Parmar graduated from the University of Manchester in 2000. He underwent postgraduate training in Manchester and Stoke prior to working in Sydney, Australia. He then completed his training in the North West of England, gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and joined the Specialist Register in 2014.

He was awarded competitive specialist fellowships at three world-renowned units: Wrightington, Liverpool Upper Limb and Trauma at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. This allowed him to gain further experience of complex upper limb conditions and to become familiar with many treatment options, utilising both arthroscopic (keyhole) and open techniques. He has since visited centres in Europe and North America to acquire new skills. These include surgeons Pierre Flurin and Thomas Wright (Equinoxe design surgeons). He has also visited the Exactech factory in Gainesville, Florida.

He has ongoing research interests and has presented his work both nationally and internationally.

Mr. Parmar volunteered for a year as a consultant in Malawi and has been invited to present his experiences both nationally and internationally. Subsequently he has maintained an active interest in supporting orthopaedics in developing countries and has written chapters for textbooks specifically aimed at treating orthopaedic injuries in the austere environment. He is also a founding member of the Implants for Malawi fundraising group and the registered charity North West Orthopaedic Trauma Alliance for Africa. He also is currently the secretary of the North West Upper Limb Group.

Mr. Chris Peach, MBBS, MD, FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Consultant Elbow and Shoulder Surgeon, University Hospital of South Manchester

Mr. Peach is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in treating disorders of the shoulder and the elbow and traumatic injuries of the entire upper limb. He uses the Subcapularis Sparing Approach for anatomical total shoulder replacement surgery.

Mr. Peach graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine and trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in London, Oxford and the North West. He spent two years undertaking a post-graduate research degree at the University of Oxford, having been awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship and examined the genetic basis of osteoarthritis in the shoulder identifying a novel gene defect in influencing crystal deposition.

Mr. Peach trained as a fellow in the Upper Limb Unit at Wrightington Hospital under Mr. Ian Trail, Mr. Len Funk and Mr. John Haines. He was awarded the Sheffield Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship and trained at the internationally recognised Northern General Hospital Upper Limb Unit with Mr. David Stanley and Mr. David Potter. He has spent time at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, in recognition of his interests in elbow surgery, to work with Dr. Shawn O’Driscoll. In 2013, he was awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society’s coveted North American Elbow Fellowship to further develop his experience in complex elbow surgery in the United States working with other leaders in the field. More recently, he has been awarded the prestigious Stephen Copeland Memorial Travelling Fellowship by the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) which he shall spend in South Africa in October 2016.

His research interests currently focus on the management of infection in elbow arthroplasty, development of a subject specific finite element model of shoulder movement and towards the development of new bioresorbable materials for use in orthopaedic trauma.

Mr. Chris Roberts, FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Mr. Roberts completed his orthopaedic training on the Cambridge rotation before undertaking an upper limb fellowship in Brisbane, Australia. He gained his FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) in 2002.

He then furthered his shoulder training under the tutelage of Dr. Joe De Beer in Cape Town, South Africa. On returning to the UK, Mr. Roberts was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital in Suffolk in 2004.

Mr. Roberts is a dedicated upper limb surgeon specialising in all aspects of shoulder surgery. He is also the orthopaedic lead for research. Mr
Roberts teaches on both shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty courses.

Mr. Roberts currently undertakes approximately 40 total shoulder replacements a year with a mix of anatomic and reverse prosthesis.

Mr. Mat Smith, FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr. Smith is a Consultant Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon at The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. He trained in Manchester and undertook fellowships in Wrightington, Preston and finally Liverpool. Having completed the Liverpool Fellowship, he took up post as Consultant in the unit in 2009.

He undertakes all aspects of shoulder surgery and has been using the Equinoxe system since 2010. He regularly implants Hemiarthroplasties & Total Shoulder Replacements in anatomical and reverse configurations. He also uses the trauma stem and is running a prospective randomised study comparing the Hemiartroplasty and Reverse Total Shoulder Replacements in reconstructable fractures of the proximal humerus in the patients over 60.

Mr. Malin Wijeratna BSC (Hons), MBBS, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr. Wijeratna qualified in 2002 from Guys, Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School in London. His postgraduate orthopaedic training was in the East of England Deanery in Cambridge and East Anglia, followed by two fellowships in shoulder and elbow surgery in Melbourne, Australia.

His specialist interests are in shoulder and elbow arthroscopy and joint replacement. Mr Wijeratna has been working as a NHS and private Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Nottingham since 2015. He performs more than 300 surgical procedures a year. Mr Wijeratna is widely published in the orthopaedic peer reviewed literature and has delivered many national and international presentations. He has been awarded prizes by the British Elbow and Shoulder Society for his research work.
